April 9th – Saturday, and 10th – Sunday, in Japan:

The GSE 2005 Exchange Journey started on April 9th . My GSE Crew Users – Harry Abbott, Julia Vasileyva, Antonio Verges and Monica Koller — gathered at the gate to board the plane at San Francisco International Airport to commence our journey to Fukuoka, Japan. It was a long flight – 14 hrs with a layover in Nagoya. When we arrived, we were welcomed by our Japanese hosts such as Mika, Izumi and Ai – and it was entertaining to see the signal welcoming the GSE Crew that they experienced posted at the arrival gate. It was about 7PM in the night on Sunday – 3AM on Saturday at home – and they took us by vehicle by way of the streets of Fukuoka to our hotel for two nights, the Nishitetsu Grand Hotel. We felt an earthquake soon after shock as we checked into our rooms – Hisa San stated that it was a “welcome shock”. The crew crashed for the night, in anticipation of a total working day tomorrow.

April 11th – Monday:

Up early this morning – completely ready to begin the working day, and in this large city I could listen to the roosters crooning. I walked a few blocks down the street for my initial cup of Starbucks espresso in Japan (have to acknowledge it tasted very good) and liked the bustle on the primary avenue of Fukuoka. On with my team blue blazer, and armed with several presents to take to our hosts (like Kona coffee from Teri in fifty percent pound baggage) – we assembled for a Japanese design breakfast back again in the lodge. I 1st observed how gracious it is listed here – mild bowing, smiles, several to escort you – and a people relationship that looks you in the eye and sees you (I like that). I’m experience comfy here.

Oh, my gosh – we are blessed with encounters. The staff users are elated. We achieved with Mika San and she outlined each and every of our ideas while we are right here, the host family members that we will be staying with, and the regions that we will check out. They say that the months of April and May possibly are the ideal months to be below – fortunate us. Fukuoka is a town of 1.seven million men and women and the island of Kyushu is about 280 miles long and 350 miles broad. We will leave Fukuoka tomorrow and go to Rotary Places six and seven which are a lot more rural.

The cherry blossoms had been in complete pressure as we headed down the river this early morning. Our 1st stop was the American Consulate. We satisfied with the Principal Officer & Consul for the U.S., Joyce Wong. She talked about her duties to the State Office and her assignment below for three years. Also about how well-known Fukuoka is because people below have a good outlook and welcoming hospitality. The Prefecture (which is like our point out) is recognized for developing teas, sweet strawberries, fruits and vegetables – and the best seafood in Japan. It makes 1 3rd of the world’s semi-conductors and is component of the Silicon Sea Belt (like our Silicon Valley) and creates about one million autos that discover their way to the U.S. market. Fukuoka was named the most livable city in Japan, she claims. We remark on what a beautiful and thoroughly clean town that it is.

Up coming we’re off to the Fukuoka West Rotary Club lunch assembly – and most noteworthy, there are no ladies in this club – think about that. We satisfy Dr. Hirohata, who is the incoming District Governor – and he suggests the he has a Japanese/Boston accent! A RI Director, Mr. Suenaga is from this Club. There are about one hundred forty customers, and the club is 50 several years previous – but not the oldest club in the City. By the way, the District has about 3700 Rotarians, and significantly less than one% are females – something to take into account here. The online video that Harry place together highlighting every of our group members labored well to demonstrate who we are, given that we are constrained in our language conversation. It was a very rigid men’s Club – with formality that we didn’t recognize.

We have been obtained in the Governor’s office in the afternoon (ie. the equivalent of “Arnold’s” office in California) and spoke with the Director of Global Affairs – and realized about the Prefecture and the Japanese federal government.

The girls obtained dressed tonight with large shoes as portion of their “appear” – and once at the restaurant we have been barefoot like all the rest. Our hosts experienced a celebration for us at the restaurant Kanzan – and it was lovely. Our hosts had been so enjoyable – they giggle a good deal, inform jokes and are really playful – by contrast. One host instructed about his very first journey to the U.S. He purchased a grapefruit on the plan and he expected to get a grape fruit – and what came to him was some thing that seemed like an orange – we all laughed difficult at that one. We had been hosted by Tomoshige Tachibana, his spouse and daughter – and he is the existing District Governor. He spoke fondly about assembly our District Governor, Ron Sekkel and Cindy – and we offered him with the reward from our Rotary District.

There had been about 30 folks at the social gathering, such as some of the family members that we will be being with. And, Kenji Ogawa (Ken) was there – he’ll be the incoming crew leader when this District sends us a group next calendar year. His group has previously been picked and we will be meeting them afterwards. We’re always surprised at the attractiveness of the presentation of the food items here – and know that the diet regime is likely to just take a handful of lbs . off of all of us. The shows are in Japanese, so we skip some of the interaction that isn’t going to get interpreted – and many of the individuals we satisfy aren’t conversant in English – but it’s better than our Japanese. The evening opened with a beautiful traditional Japanese dance – and integrated a lot of sake and beer to make the evening merry. It was a really entire initial working day.

April 12th – Tuesday:

Soon after breakfast and luggage in the foyer – we headed for the teach station to go away Fukuoka and travel into the countryside. Dr. Maruyana took us on the teach to Omuta and the Omuta Rotary Club. The place was established western design, and with about sixty – and again – no ladies in this Club. Julia, Monica and I stood out in the area. As Izumi (Dr. Maruyana) and I talked about girls in Rotary – he pointed out to me that it is not only an problem of gender but also one particular of “course” that has restricted women in Rotary right here. He was sort and explained that there are not quite a lot of of me below – meaning that girl have not typically experienced the entry to the economic composition below that I have had in the U.S. Also that women are not regarded in the greater course of the modern society that Rotary chooses its membership from below. Fascinating – it is tough for me to maintain my tongue. I level out to the Club as I converse that my Club appears really different than theirs – that my Club has 50% ladies. And even more, that numerous men in The usa had difficulty with this alter, that some left Rotary in protest – but that they generally enjoy women in Rotary now. They shake their heads – and a person interprets that they are saying, no girls below. They ask what classifications of women be part of our Club. They will not believe that this will change in the future. Izumi suggests that he is radical – that he thinks that this alter is necessary and that the world’s foreseeable future calls for it.

Back on the prepare – much like our trains only very cleanse – we keep on down the line to Kurume Metropolis. The properties are receiving even bigger (with Shogun-style roofs) and there are beautiful mountains in see. We are going to Nishi-Nippon shinbun (Newspaper) exactly where we fulfill with a reporter who asks about us and plans to do an article in the premier newspaper. It’s a wander from there, with the wind blowing hard, to City Corridor and the Mayor’s Office. The Mayor joins us and we find out that the photograph to accompany the newspaper post is taken with the Mayor in his business office and his heat welcome.

Izumi has a lovely home with some western looking rooms, and a place that we get in and sit cross legged all around the desk. Japanese sweets and tea is served and pcs in mass come out to see what we’ve recorded for the working day. Uncomfortable to tell but I went upstairs to the lavatory, and pushed the mistaken button on the bathroom – and water shot all above the ceiling – imagine. They have it all above us in bathrooms listed here – they’re heated and do all types of issues.

Last night time at the meal, Mr. Tanaka served as a Japanese metaphor for me. He set a chopstick on the table – then meant with his mind, as he suggests – and moved that chopstick six inches in the air with out touching it. But that was not all, he borrowed someone’s watch – and by putting his arms on both sides of it – and intending with the concentration of his brain – he moved the time ahead by an hour! Amazing.

Harry San, Monica San, Julia San, Antonio San and I go off to our host families from Izumi’s house and started out our Japanese keep. From here you will be listening to from every of us individually – with unique activities and I am going to continue to talk about the items that we are undertaking together. So lucky – I am keeping with the Tanaka’s. A lot baggage is moved and every person goes off happily, with my cell telephone number as essential.

Ai picks me up, with the Tanaka’s and we are headed to a extremely special Japanese type cafe – and much more modest plates of food than I can take in. Quickly, even though, after evening meal – we choose that we are heading to head to the Scorching Springs – wow – am I prepared for that. We enter a developing with a women’s side and a men’s side – peel off to get in the warm pools, yes – it soothed. By taxi we drove to Ogori and the hundred calendar year old home have been the Tanaka’s live. I’m being in a area to myself with a futon bed and slept really comfortably. In the night we giggle a whole lot as the translation goes back again and forth – with Ai translating – simply because the Tanaka’s do not speak significantly English. www.archesjapan.com consider that his company is importing and exporting, but not positive – but they vacation and Mrs. Tanaka has several of the identical manufacturers of apparel that I recognize, from her outings – such as a gorgeous Italian match that she was wearing. After I was in their house, all ended up very comfortable and genuinely hospitable – we are well cared for right here.

This post is a series — so read through on — and numerous times adhere to in our splendid adventure!
